Our bees (tweed valley)

Social bees such as honey bees or bumblebees live in hives or nests. These are the bees that we collect beeswax & honey from. In fact, Peeblesshire is thought to be a hotspot for colonies of bees, known as Apis mellifera (latin for honey-bearing bee), with a high percentage of black bee genetics within them. We work with Peeblesshire Beekeepers Association (PBKA) and neighbouring independent beekeepers to ensure our wax & honey is ethically sourced. The (PBKA) launched a conservation project for Scotland’s native bees to preserve black bees in the Borders & contribute to strengthening the bee population. Many of the beekeepers we work with collect wax from their hives every other year just to make sure the bees have more than they need. Very happy bees indeed!!!!

If you would like to learn more about bees, PBKA run courses in the early sping. To find out more about this have a look at their website peeblesbeekeepers.org.uk

Why are bees so important? Skin benefits?

Honey & beeswax are a humectant, this allows your skin to absorb and retain moisture to keep it from drying out. It’s also packed with natural antioxidants as well as antiseptic & antimicrobial properties (this means that it inhibits the growth and reproduction of microorganisms). Honey is an agent that destroys microbes, inhibits their growth preventing and even counteracts their pathogenic action. These super properties mean it acts as a protective barrier while allowing the skin to breathe, repair, soothe and nourish. Earlier I mentioned the black bee being native to the Borders. Black bees produce powerful honey & royal jelly that is essential for the skin. Because our beeswax is not over refined it will naturally contain royal jelly. Clinical studies have shown faster regeneration & restoration of the skin’s barrier (National Institute of Health 2020). In addition, studies have shown honey is particularly effective as a dressing for wounds & still used in the medical field today.

All our products contain a combination of either local beeswax or honey- this is, we believe the key ingredients to why our products really benefit the skin. Both beeswax & honey is still used today in hospitals in medicinal terms. Just as it was used in for example; wound healing in world war 1 & 2 with it’s natural healing properties. The combination of our bee ingredients & natural, organic unrefined butters & non diluted oils are primarily formulated to soothe and re-hydrate your skin.
